Type Ia Supernovae and Q 0
نویسنده
چکیده
Type Ia Supernovae hold great promise to measure the cosmic deceleration. The diversity observed among these explosions, however , complicates their ability to measure cosmological parameters considerably. The comparison of near and distant objects depends critically on the global properties of the samples. Systematic errors are introduced in cases where the samples are not compatible. Our discussion of systematic uncertainties emphasizes the dependence on the zero-point defined by the nearby SNe Ia sample and the influence of the application of light curve corrections to the luminosity. Other error sources are in principle controllable. We illustrate the effects in an analysis of four SNe Ia at z > 0.4.

Type Ia Supernovae as Extragalactic Distance Indicators
Because Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are not perfect standard candles, it is important to be able to use distance–independent observables (DIOs) to define subsets of SNe Ia that are " nearly standard candles " or to correct SN Ia absolute magnitudes to make them nearly homogeneous (" standardized candles "). This is not crucial for the measurement of H 0 , but it is for the measurement of q 0 an...
متن کاملK-corrections and Extinction Corrections for Type Ia Supernovae
The measurement of the cosmological parameters from Type Ia supernovae hinges on our ability to compare nearby and distant supernovae accurately. Here we present an advance on a method for performing generalized K-corrections for Type Ia supernovae which allows us to compare these objects from the UV to near-IR over the redshift range 0 < z < 2. We discuss the errors currently associated with t...
متن کاملMeasurements of the Cosmological Parameters and from the First 7 Supernovae at z 0 : 35
We have developed a technique to systematically discover and study high-redshift supernovae that can be used to measure the cosmological parameters. We report here results based on the initial seven of >28 supernovae discovered to date in the high-redshift supernova search of the Supernova Cosmology Project. We nd an observational dispersion in peak magnitudes of M B = 0:27; this dispersion nar...
متن کاملSpectropolarimetry of Supernovae
Overwhelming evidence has accumulated in recent years that supernova explosions are intrinsically 3-dimensional phenomena with significant departures from spherical symmetry. We review the evidence derived from spectropolarimetry that has established several key results: virtually all supernovae are significantly aspherical near maxim light; core-collapse supernovae behave differently than ther...

Analytic expressions for distance-redshift relations which have been corrected for the effects of some inhomogeneities in the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) mass density are used to illustrate the significance of inhomogeneities on a determination of q 0 made by using Type Ia supernovae. The value of q 0 inferred from a given set of observations depends on the fractional amount of matter in i...
